Yes, as long as you have the wall width and you plan around depth. The standard HOMEDANT HOUSE 5-tier heavy duty shelf needs 48.1 inches of wall but projects only 16.5 inches into the room. That lets it line a hallway nook, a spare-room wall or a small home office without eating the floor you actually walk on.
Why depth decides whether a small room still works
In a tight room, the space you feel is the strip of floor between the shelf and whatever sits across from it. Width uses wall you probably weren't using anyway, while depth takes walkway.
That's why the extra-deep version is a harder sell in small rooms. At 24.4 inches deep, it reaches 7.9 inches farther from the wall than the standard model. The extra room helps with bulky bins, but in a narrow hallway those inches can mean turning sideways to get past.
Both versions are 71.3 inches tall, so most of their storage goes up rather than out. Both are also HOMEDANT HOUSE units with hidden post holes. That matters in an apartment, where the shelf sits in plain view instead of behind a garage door.

How do I measure a tight spot before ordering?
- Wall run. Measure at the floor and again about 6 feet up. Baseboards, trim and outlet covers can steal space at one height and not the other.
- Walkway. Subtract the shelf depth from the distance to the nearest obstacle. Tape the outline on the floor and walk past it carrying a laundry basket or a vacuum.
- Doors and drawers. Open every door, closet door and dresser drawer that swings toward the spot to make sure nothing hits the frame.
- Height. Look for sloped ceilings, window sills, light switches and thermostats that a tall unit would cover.
- Your containers. Measure the bins or boxes you plan to use. Anything deeper than the shelf overhangs into the walkway you just measured.
Standard or extra-deep for a small space
For most small rooms, pick the standard depth. It comes in black or white. Save the extra-deep white shelf for an alcove, a wide utility closet or the end of a room, where its depth doesn't cut across a path.
| Version | Model | W x D x H (in) | Base per shelf | Base total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard, black | HS124018Z-5B | 48.1 x 16.5 x 71.3 | 176 lb | 880 lb |
| Standard, white | HS124018Z-5W | 48.1 x 16.5 x 71.3 | 176 lb | 880 lb |
| Extra-deep, white | HS126018Z-5W | 48.1 x 24.4 x 71.3 | 176 lb | 880 lb |
Without reinforcement, each of the three units holds up to 176 lb per shelf and 880 lb for the whole unit. With one optional LiftBeam reinforcement bar (sold separately) installed under a shelf, that shelf is rated for 551 lb. Installing two LiftBeams under a shelf raises that shelf's rating to 771 lb. HOMEDANT publishes a whole-unit total of 2,755 lb for these models, but only when one LiftBeam is installed under every shelf.
Small rooms often push heavy things onto one shelf because there's nowhere else to put them. Before loading, weigh a full bin by stepping on a bathroom scale while holding it, then subtract your own weight. Keep the heaviest items on the lower tiers.
Frequently asked questions
What if my wall is narrower than 48.1 inches?
HOMEDANT also makes narrower shelf sizes, so this width isn't your only option. Check those product pages for exact dimensions and ratings, then run the same measuring steps.
Can I roll this shelf out to clean behind it?
No. These are standing shelves and don't come with casters. If you need to move storage to reach an outlet or vacuum behind it, look at a HOMEDANT rolling shelf instead, and check its rolling capacity, which is a separate rating.
