27-Gallon Storage Bins: What Shelf Depth Do You Need?

For standard 27-gallon storage bins, the shelf depth you need is at least the depth of the bin's base, measured front to back. Many totes run about 20 inches at the rim with the long side facing out, so a 20-inch shelf supports them fully. An 18-inch or shallower shelf works only if the tapered base sits entirely on the deck.

How deep should a shelf be for a 27-gallon tote?

Size labels describe volume, not shape. Two 27-gallon totes from different brands can differ by an inch or more. Many are roughly 30 inches long and 20 inches wide at the rim, and most taper, so the bottom is smaller than the lid. That gap between rim and base decides whether a shallower shelf will work for you.

What matters is where the weight lands. A lid rim that sticks out a little is mostly a clearance issue. A bin bottom hanging past the shelf edge is another story: the load concentrates on the front edge, and the bin can tip when you pull it out. Run this check before you buy:

  1. Measure the bin's base, not just the lid, on both sides.
  2. Plan to store it long side forward. Turned the other way, a 30-inch bin needs a 30-inch-deep shelf.
  3. Confirm the base depth is equal to or less than the shelf depth.
  4. Measure bin height with the lid on, then add room to lift the front edge as you slide it out.
  5. Measure the wall space too. HOMEDANT suggests leaving about 2-3 cm of extra clearance around the unit.

Which HOMEDANT shelf fits 27-gallon bins best?

The heavy duty shelf is the deeper of the two, so it gives a tapered tote the best chance of sitting fully on the deck. The standing shelf is shallower and suits bins with a smaller base.

Model W x D x H (in) Base per shelf Base total
SS124518Z-5B / SS124518Z-5W 47.7 x 18.2 x 71.3 176 lb 880 lb
SS904018-5W 35.9 x 16.2 x 71.3 264 lb 1320 lb

The 47.7-inch heavy duty shelf comes in black (SS124518Z-5B) or white (SS124518Z-5W), with the same specs either way. At 18.2 inches deep, it can hold a 27-gallon tote whose base measures 18.2 inches or less front to back, even if the lid rim overhangs slightly. Expect one 30-inch bin per shelf, long side forward. Two of these big totes side by side won't fit, and any leftover width depends on the usable space between the posts, which is less than the outside measurement, so measure before planning smaller containers beside the tote.

Each shelf is rated for 176 lb as it comes. Install one optional LiftBeam under a shelf and that shelf is rated for 551 lb; with two LiftBeams, it's rated for 771 lb. LiftBeams are sold separately, and their ratings apply only to the shelves where they're installed.

The 35.9-inch standing shelf (SS904018-5W) carries a higher base rating per shelf, but its 16.2-inch depth is shallower than many 27-gallon totes. It's a fit only for a bin whose base measures 16.2 inches or less front to back. If your 27-gallon tote is bigger than that, use this shelf for smaller bins that pass the same base check.

Frequently asked questions

How heavy can a full 27-gallon bin get?

It depends on what's inside. A tote of holiday linens may be light, while one packed with books or tools gets heavy fast. Weigh a loaded bin on a bathroom scale, then add up everything on each shelf, including any smaller boxes beside it.

Where should the heaviest bins go?

On the lowest shelves. They're easier to slide out without lifting overhead, and the unit stays more stable. Keep the upper shelves for lighter seasonal totes you rarely pull down.

Can I add more tiers?

Yes. The standard setup is 5 tiers, and HOMEDANT sells compatible Extra Shelves to build a 6- or 7-tier unit. More tiers mean less space between shelves, so check that gap against your bin height first.
