Splitting a 5-Tier Shelf: Two Units or a Workbench?

Yes, a tall HOMEDANT HOUSE 5-tier shelving unit can be split into two shorter units. Its split-post design lets you build one 5-tier unit or two lower units, one with 3 tiers and one with 2. A workbench is another matter. The short half works as low storage or light-duty counter space, not a bench for hammering or clamping.

How the split-post design works

The posts come in sections that join end to end. Stack them all and you get the full tower. Use them separately and you get two short frames, one carrying three of the shelf panels and the other carrying two.

That's handy when your space changes. Picture the full unit against a basement wall today, then split between a laundry nook and the space under a garage window after a move. The tiers stay the same either way; you're only deciding where they go.

Be careful with the load ratings. The HOMEDANT HOUSE standing shelf is rated for 264 lb per shelf, and its 1,320 lb total applies to the assembled 5-tier unit. Adding the two halves together won't give you extra capacity. Plan each shelf against the per-shelf figure, and weigh your heaviest bins on a bathroom scale before loading them.

Picking a size to split

Both sizes are 16.5 inches deep, so the real choice is width and how tall the tower stands before you split it.

Shelf W x D x H (in) Per shelf Total (5-tier) Colors
24.4-inch HOMEDANT HOUSE shelf 24.4 x 16.5 x 59.5 264 lb 1,320 lb Black or white
36.2-inch HOMEDANT HOUSE shelf 36.2 x 16.5 x 71.3 264 lb 1,320 lb Black

Go with the 24.4-inch shelf (HS604015-5B) if each half has to fit a narrow spot, like beside a washer or at the end of a pantry. In a kitchen or closet where black steel would look out of place, pick the white version.

If you want the short half to act like a counter, the 36.2-inch shelf is the better choice. Its wider top leaves room for a toolbox with a clear patch left over for sorting screws or repotting a plant.

Can the 2-tier half work as a workbench?

Only for light tasks. The 264 lb rating describes weight resting on a shelf. It doesn't cover hammer blows, a clamped vise, or the side-to-side push of sawing. A standing shelf's top panel isn't built for those forces, and repeated jolts can loosen a boltless frame.

Used gently, it makes a decent packing table, potting station or spot to fold laundry. Check four things before you count on it:

  1. Height. Assemble the 2-tier unit, then measure to the top shelf. Compare that number to where your hands rest comfortably while standing.
  2. Weight low. Keep heavy items on the lower shelf so the unit doesn't feel top-heavy while you work on it.
  3. Surface. Lay a scrap of plywood or a mat on top if you'll be using sharp tools or glue.
  4. Force. If the job needs clamping, pounding or prying, buy a dedicated workbench and keep the shelf for storage beside it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go taller instead of splitting?

Yes. Compatible Extra Shelves let you build the standard 5-tier unit up to 6 or 7 tiers. Check compatibility under Accessories > Extra Shelf before ordering.

Can I rejoin the halves later?

The split-post design works both ways. You can reassemble the two short units into the original 5-tier shelf whenever you need vertical storage again.
